Mark Selby produced a career-defining performance in front of his home crowd, defeating world number one Judd Trump 10–5 to claim the 2025 Champion of Champions title at the Leicester Arena. It was Selby’s first triumph in the prestigious invitational event, having appeared at every edition since its launch in 2013 without previously reaching the final.
Trump raced into a 3–1 lead with centuries of 111 and 114, but Selby responded with four consecutive frames to lead 5–3 at the end of the first session. After Trump levelled at 5–5, Selby produced a devastating closing stretch—a tournament-high 138 pushed him to 8–5, and back-to-back centuries of 101 and 136 sealed a comprehensive victory. The £150,000 winner’s cheque was a fitting reward for a week of outstanding snooker.
The tournament was not without controversy. Alfie Burden was initially omitted from the field before being included as a late addition, while Shaun Murphy was vocal in his criticism of Matchroom’s scheduling. On the table, Lei Peifan produced an impressive run that included an upset victory over Murphy, and a record five Chinese players featured in the quarter-final draw—further evidence of the sport’s shifting landscape.
